Driver W Howells, W/3285, 122nd Brigade Royal Field Artillery

Awarded for actions at Les Pins, France.

The London Gazette on 16th January 1919 states;

"He was the wheel driver of an ammunition wagon which came under heavy artillery fire at Pins, on 8th September 1918. A shell pitched on the leading team, obliterating the driver and horses. Though temporarily blinded by the explosion, he kept his presence of mind, and realising that to stop would mean blocking the road, and keeping all the following wagons under shell fire, he managed to keep his horses going until one of them collapsed, injuring him badly. He declined to be relieved and took the remaining horse back to lines. His gallantry and coolness undoubtedly averted what might have been a situation of great difficulty and severe loss."
