The London Gazette on 3rd September 1918 states;
"For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during an enemy attack on battalion headquarters. He took command of a party after his Regimental Serjeant-Major was hit, and handled them with great skill. Next day he took charge of two Lewis guns, and inflicted heavy loss on the enemy. He showed great courage and ability."
