Private Lewis Rogers, 1946, 2nd Welsh Regiment

Awarded the DCM for wounding and capturing multiple Germans at Givenchy.

The London Gazette on 1st April 1915 states;

"For conspicuous gallantry at Givenchy on 25th January 1915, when he located eight Germans in a house, and, after obtaining the assistance of two men, captured four of them and wounded the remainder."

The Merthyr Express on Saturday 15th May 1915 reports the following;

MERTHYR SOLDIER WINS D.C.M

His many Merthyr friends will be pleased to learn that Pte Lewis Rogers, 2nd Welsh Regiment, eldest son of the firm Messrs Rogers and Sons, chalk and stone merchants, Caedraw, Merthyr, has been awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal. A short time ago we published a letter from Pte Rogers giving an account of the fight in connection with which his bravery has been so deservedly recognised.

He was on a barricade across the main street when Lieut Hawkesworth called for volunteers to occupy a farmhouse where the Germans had broken in on the right. On reaching the farm, Pte Rogers found that there was no loophole from which he could shoot, so he sailed forth alone with his loaded rifle. He spotted some Germans and fired several rounds at them, killing two, and the rest decamped. He gave chase by crossing the village street and found cover in the churchyard. Again, he got within range of the enemy, shot two more, and four others threw up their arms and surrendered. Private Rogers was assisted by two of the Black Watch in escorting the prisoners back to British Lines.
